Genesis 3-19

1. In Gen 3:1 the tempter begins, “Did God actually say.” Why does he first go after God’s word?

2. In Gen 4:9 Cain undermines the word of the Lord when he avoids God’s question. God in turn supports his word by the ground, the blood, and the voice of Abel. How does God use the tangible sign of the ground to remind Cain of His word?

3. Unlike Eve and Cain who twisted God’s word Enoch walked with God in 5:24. What would walking mean in an age before cars? Is walking a metaphor (a comparative illustration) a typology (an action that is later replaced with a more complete action) a synecdoche (part of the action that is used in summery of the whole) or a simple act of faith?

4. Luther says that when 6:2 talks about the Sons of God “seeing” that which was attractive in the daughters of Cain, is language that means they turned away from seeing God’s word and what God called good. What then does in mean that God limits My abiding Spirit in man? (6:3)

5. In 7:4 God plans to “blot out” the problem. This is often used to describe crossing out a word from the book. Since man was created by the word of the Lord, what would it mean to be blotted out of his word?

6. In 8:1 rather than blotting out God remembers. Is this good news?

7. In 9:15 who is supposed to do the remembering?

8. Gen 10:5 notes that each clan had its own language suggesting that this chapter comes chronologically after chapter 11. 10:10 says that Nimrod began a kingdom in Babel. 10:32 says the nations spread abroad on the earth. 11:4 says the people of Babel did not want to be dispersed. 11:9 says the Lord dispersed them. Do these chapters work together?

9. In 12:3 the word families replaces the word clans and nations. What is the blessing of God that enables this change?

10. In 13:17 God invites Abraham to walk. Is this something different than what happened in Egypt.

11. In 14:20 Melcheizedek blesses Abram with words that proclaim God the Most high has delivered the victory to Abram. Why does Abram refuse his share of the plunder? (14:24)

12. Gen 15:1 note that the Word of the Lord comes to Abram. What is the reward in God’s Word? (15:6)

13. Who is Hagar to return to in 16:9? What kind of son will she have in 16:12?

14. In 17:7-8 God promises twice to be God. Abram (high father) is renamed Abraham (father of multitudes) Yet Isaac is yet to be born. So what is Abraham called to do?

15. 15 years earlier God had used Abraham to rescue Sodom and Gomorah. Now their sin is very grave. God plans to visit personally before he issues judgement. Is this for his benefit or that of the judged or Abraham?

16. In 19:20 what is the reason God gives for rescuing Lot.

Matthew 2-7
17. In Matthew 2:5 what is the reason given for the Christ to be born in Bethlehem?

18. In 3:3 what is the reason given for the preaching of Repentance?

19. In 4:4,7,10 How does Jesus answer temptations?

20. In 5:17 what is the difference between abolish and fulfill?

21. In 6:20 where are we to lay up treasures?

22. In 7:11 what does our Father in heaven want to do?
